Gillen’s Candies, Blanco

Gillen’s Candies in Blanco is born from a family legacy reaching back to the early 1900s.  Their family history is entwined with the history of our country.  Before Russell Stover, there was Gillen’s Candies.

The Blanco store carries on the family candy traditions and adds some flavor of their own with wines, craft beers, and award-winning, preservative free, beef jerky.  While I did not find any items available for purchase online, a trip to the store would definitely make for a great date.  Click here to see what I mean… Bonnat-Bon-Bons-DSC01321-300x199

From Gillenscandies.com

“Steve W. Gillen, great-grandson of Frank E Gillen and grandson of Tillie and Frank R Gillen, has decided to continue the family business but with a little twist. “My grandfather, Frank R Gillen, believed in excellence so I am trying to continue the excellence in the chocolate and the products that I purchase.” Gillen’s Candies has evolved from just chocolate to also including wines, jerky, craft beer, and other artisan products.”

“Steve scoured the nation for the top chocolatier’s that meet the quality expected by you. “

Dude, Sweet Chocolate, Dallas

“At Dude, Sweet Chocolate we concoct, manufacture, distribute, and retail dark chocolate inspired creations as our core business. Our product line is very fluid and seasonal, but usually contains fudges, truffles, toffees, nuts, artisan chocolates, and basically anything else our chef decides to improve by introducing it to cacao.

Dude, Sweet Chocolate traces its roots to a dive bar just south of downtown Dallas, Lee Harvey’s, where co-founders Chef Katherine Clapner and Redding May were regulars. Heading towards the holidays in 2008, he partnered with her to send unique artisan chocolates as client gifts while working with Merrill Lynch. After that, she ran with the idea – pushing her chocolate creations in the summer heat at farmers markets and the like. Mid-year 2009, she brought up the idea of opening a store, and the first small kitchen/store was built-out and opened in early December that year.”

They have a nice selection available online.  Click here to shop.

14 Days of Totally Texas Valentine Ideas

February is such a great month don’t you think?  Lots of great things in February for Texans.  Likely as not you’re going to see some of the first hints of spring, as with the furiously blooming peach tree in my yard (pictured above).  Tiny wildflowers poking out of the bright green winter grass.  Birds, birds, birds everywhere.  Lots of newly born calves in the pasture.  And all those calves need ropin’ so rodeo season also saddles up in February.

Yes, Nature teases us in February with the promise of spring , and often fools us with a late frost in April.  But we ain’t complainin’ 😉

There is one day in February however, that strikes fear in many a cowboy and cowgirl.  You guessed it, the big V, Valentine’s Day.  Well, TotallyTexasGifts.com is here to help all y’all out.  I’ve searched out some local artists, artisans and merchants with great gift and date ideas for your special someone and I’ll be featuring them here on the Totally Texas Blog as well as Facebook & Instagram with all their “deets” so you can surprise your sweetie with a great Totally Texas Gift this February 14.

Day One will feature chocolates and confections from around the state, many available by online order so you will still have time to get yours for Valentine’s Day even if they don’t happen to be in your local area.

Day Two features Texas Wine and the folks who love it.  It was SOOOOO hard to narrow down the selection, in the end I just had to stop looking and go with my first finds.  I am determined to revisit the subject more in depth.  It’s a tuff job, but somebody has to woman up for it 😉

So follow @totallytexasgifts on Facebook & Instagram and SIGN UP HERE to receive the monthly Totally Texas Gifts newsletter.

I look forward to hearing from ya.

Cheers y’all!
